Moving to a New Home: A Few Tips to Get You Started
Whether you are moving for a job, retirement, or any other reason, looking for a new home in a new area can be difficult. How do you know what the best neighborhood for your family will be? Or what amenities you’ll want to be close to? You may choose to rent for a time until you feel you know the area better before you buy. Either way, here are a few tips to help you get started.
Communicate with your real estate agent about what your needs, wants and lifestyle entail. A local agent can help you buy property in an area that best fits your needs, because they know more about what is available, where.
When you go out to view a property, try to talk to the neighbors. They can give you valuable insight about both the purchase or rental property you are looking at, as well as general neighborhood information. You can learn if the area will suit you well personally as well as find out some opinions about the quality of local schools, shops and services.
Bring along a list of the measurements of your favorite larger pieces of furniture. Not everyone can accurately guesstimate whether or not their things will fit into a space. Much older homes, especially, may have narrow staircases that could pose a problem when bringing larger pieces – such as queen or king sized mattresses and box springs – upstairs. If you have a large, but beloved or heirloom piece, keep the measurements with you when you shop for a place to live.
If possible, start reading the local paper before you move. Many local newspapers are available online, and are a wealth of local information. You can get a wonderful picture of what the local happenings are, and quite importantly, where the local happenings are. Local fairs, concerts and cultural events will be both listed as well as reviewed and can help paint a picture of what each areas unique flavor might be.
Check the local weather! The right heating or cooling system for the climate you’ll be moving to can have a huge impact on how you feel about living there. Find out what has been installed at your new place before you buy.
